Michael Neumann

Kitchen Design Contest Winner
Regional Award Winner
KDC 2010-12

Principal Michael Neumann founded MNA in 1995, after formative years at Shelton Mindel Architects. His personal attention to detail and consistency of design for every project has helped MNA sustain long term relationships with clients such as Ralph Lauren, Williams-Sonoma, Coach, Lilly Pulitzer and American Eagle Outfitters.

Under his leadership, MNA has received both national and international recognition with numerous projects selected for publication and an array of awards for its residential and retail projects. Michael’s interest in providing clients with richer built environments has led to the firm’s ability to offer integrated architectural, interior design, and visual merchandising services. Michael received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University.

Where do you find design inspiration?

In general, we find design inspiration from nature, art, and the built environment – details and materials both contemporary and historic – as they pertain to the program and feeling of the project. We have looked at everything from iconic fashion photos to Joseph Cornell boxes, from tree bark to beach shacks. We also draw inspiration from our clients and the mood they wish to express through the design. We interpret their stories into built form.

How do you approach the design process?

First, we take time to fully understand the client’s needs and tastes and then gather inspiration images – architectural and otherwise- that reflect our interpretation of the client’s desires. We then "micro-design" the layout based of the way the client actually uses the kitchen. Ultimately, we aim for a unified design that is consistent, efficient and evocative of the client's aesthetic.

What makes your aesthetic stand out amongst other designers?

We strive to achieve simplicity, elegance and clarity of design and materials. We can adapt to a client’s preferred aesthetic – whether contemporary or traditional- but we aim to be consistent in our attention to detail, and richness of materials. With kitchens, we devote study to making appliances and cabinetry fully integrated. For example, we will match the profile of the Wolf range to the adjacent steel counters for a seamless flow of surfaces and we develop pull hardware for cabinetry that builds on the vocabulary of the Wolf and Sub-Zero appliance pulls.

What is the greatest value you provide to your clients?

We consider ourselves good listeners and proficient problem solvers who love a design challenge. We succeed at interpreting a client’s needs and creating a space that addresses those needs. We also bring to the table experience in a variety of types of interior architecture – high end retail, restaurants and bars as well as residential. For kitchens in particular, we also have an excellent understanding of what does and doesn’t work.
