Blue or Green Ice Cubes or White Flecks in Ice

Cause:

  • Copper corrosion in the water line supplying the refrigerator causes blue or green ice.
  • Calcium deposits in water cause white flecks in ice cubes especially as it melts.
  • When water freezes and thaws, the minerals in it concentrate and the thaw cycle contributes to this.
  • Ice shrinks as it evaporates, leaving this concentrated mineral ‘residue’.
  • Calcium deposits are not visible in liquid water. Make a batch of ice in an ice tray using water from a different tap to test home water supply.
  • Calcium deposits may just be in the water line to the unit. Using the filter in the unit (BI and Designer (Formerly Integrated)) or adding a filter to the water line can help reduce calcium deposits.
  • Cloudy ice is the result of mineral deposits in the water that appears as the ice drys out.

Steps to Verify Issue:

  1. Verify no service messages, icons, or error codes are displayed.
  2. If installed, verify the in-line water filter is not expired.
  3. Adding an in-line water filter (available at most home improvement stores) may reduce or eliminate discoloration.
    • Refer to the product installation guide for water pressure specifications.
  4. Discontinue use of ice.
  5. Consult with a local plumber.
    • Plumbers may clear water lines and replace corroded plumbing fixtures for blue/green ice.
    • Plumbers may suggest the best kind of filter for white sediment in water.
  6. For any other color ice cubes, contact a plumber as this is a water or water line issue.
