Gas Range Green or Yellow Burner Flames

Topics:

  • Surface burners on R series gas range are producing green flames with an ammonia odor
  • Why are gas burner flames yellow
  • Cooktop, Range, and Rangetop surface burner producing green or yellow flames

Cause:

  • Improper air / gas mixture
  • Burner heads not seated properly
  • Burner heads need cleaning
  • Some LP flames have yellow or orange tipping normally
  • Ammonia in gas line

Troubleshooting:

If the unit is LP Gas

  1. If the surface burners were recently cleaned with any type of chemical, rewash them with soap and water.
    • Dry thoroughly before retesting.
  2. If it is more noticeable in colder weather, it may be due to LP gas settling based on weather conditions that can cause performance issues.
  3. If the issue only occurs early or late in the day and subsides in the afternoon, as temperatures warm, or after the burners have been in use for a period of time it may be due to the LP gas.
    • Propane gas can settle based on weather conditions causing performance issues
  4. Verify the LP tank is not low on fuel
    • Propane tanks operating at a low level of fuel can cause performance issues.

For LP and Natural Gas Models

  1. If the surface burners were recently cleaned with any type of chemical, rewash them with soap and water.
    • Dry thoroughly before retesting.
  2. Verify the gas supply line is 3/4" rigid pipe
    • If a copper line was used, it could be contributing to the discoloration of the flame.
