Sub-Zero Over-Under Freezer Compartment Drawer Will Not Open or Close

Cause:

  • Something blocking the drawer or slides from opening or closing properly
  • Drawer or drawer slide is broken

Troubleshooting:

For freezer drawer not closing:

  1. Verify that no food items are blocking the upper basket or freezer drawer from closing.
  2. Make sure the custom panel is aligned properly on Designer (IT) and overlay models.
  3. Verify that the ice maker control/sensing arm is not in the lower position, preventing the upper basket from sliding back.
    • Gently lift the control arm back to the up position.
    • Make sure that the control arm lowers back into the ice bin as the upper freezer basket is slid back.
  4. Verify that no ice is frozen over the drawer slides. Remove or defrost ice if necessary.
  5. Remove the freezer basket(s), refer to:
  6. Install the freezer basket(s), verify proper operation.
    • Make sure the basket is installed correctly. It may be possible to put the basket in backwards on some models.
  7. If these troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, service is necessary to expertly diagnose and repair the product. Contact Factory Certified Service to schedule an appointment for repair.

For freezer drawer not opening:

  1. If a known food obstruction is blocking the drawer from opening, open the drawer as far as possible and gently rock it from side to side. This can help to free the obstruction.
  2. Make sure custom panel is aligned properly on Designer and overlay models.
  3. For ice buildup preventing the drawer from opening, turn the unit off. Turn the dial control down past 1 to off.
  4. Allow the unit to sit for approximately 8 hours, or until it is at room temperature and dry.
    • After a couple of hours, try opening the drawer again.
  5. Watch for dripping water and clean up as needed.
  6. Remove the drain pan and empty as needed.
  7. If these troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, service is necessary to expertly diagnose and repair the product. Contact Factory Certified Service to schedule an appointment for repair.
