Refrigerator or Freezer Odor from Spoiled Food

Topics:

How do I remove persistent odors after food spoiled in a refrigerator or freezer?

Cause:

  • Food spoiled due to power outage or unit malfunction
  • Food spoiled in unit during extended vacation

Troubleshooting:

  1. Make a cleaning solution of warm water, dish soap, and a capful of bleach.
  2. Remove all shelving and clean with solution. If odors persist after cleaning, replace shelves.
  3. Clean unit including drain pan, tubes, gaskets, and all crevices thoroughly using solution.
  4. Block the doors open and keep a fan blowing on it for a few days if possible.
  5. Crumple up newspapers or place a few charcoal briquettes in a container in the affected compartment.
  6. Ice maker and evaporator area cleaning require Factory Certified Service.
  7. If odors persist after a few weeks of cleaning, the unit may not be salvageable. Contact the home owner's insurance company for resolution.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, no further troubleshooting advice is available. Contact Factory Certified Service to schedule an appointment for repair.
