Q&A with Allison Burke
Where do you find design inspiration?
My biggest design inspiration comes from nature. I love using organic colors and textures to enhance my interiors. I am also very inspired by classic, timeless architecture and always work to enhance the architectural experience rather than distract from it.
What is the great asset you provide your client?
I see myself as the client’s insurance policy that they are going to get the home of their dreams and the full execution of my design intent. I always have their back and strive to give them the best value, which is actually a balance of craft, quality and economy. My projects are always collaborative and as much my client’s vision as mine.
What is your biggest challenge as a designer/architect?
Currently the biggest challenge is a thriving economy, and everything is so expensive to have built. We are gratefully in a very busy market in Austin. There isn’t a single hungry subcontractor and their pricing shows. Even the simplest and most economical designs turn out to be expensive. We often have to get very creative to get the most value out of our designs without looking inexpensive.

Sub-Zero and Wolf are the ultimate products that we can specify in the kitchen. The quality and craft of Sub-Zero and Wolf products is far superior to any other appliance brands on the market. This competition is truly the Best of the Best specifically because of these brands, and the level of kitchen design needs to match the quality of the product that we use in it.
What are some of the current design trends?
The biggest trend I’m seeing is the elimination of the formal dining room—many kitchens have eat-in areas with banquette’s or bars so that the party doesn’t have to stop when it’s time to sit down for dinner. Everyone likes hanging out in the Kitchen.
Where do you see kitchen design going in the next 5 years?
I think the kitchen design market is going to stay on the trend of being very simple and efficient. I also think clients are going to continue to demand a professional level of product, especially as Austin in particular stays a 'foodie' destination. Everyone wants to be able to cook the level of cuisine they can find in a restaurant.
