Sub-Zero Running in Cold Temperatures

  • Sub-Zero installed in a garage during the winter
  • Sub-Zero installed outdoors where temperatures get very cold
  • Can heat be added to a Sub-Zero to allow running in cold temperatures?
  • What will happen if a refrigeration product is installed in a cold-weather setting?

Sub-Zero products are not designed to operate in a garage or outdoors where it will encounter below-freezing temperatures.

  • Except for outdoor models, Sub-Zero products are designed to run in a 60°F to 90°F (15°C to 32°C) environment.
    • Refrigeration units are not designed to heat. They remove heat from the compartment and cannot add heat to it.
    • When a unit reaches a temperature below the lowest setpoint, it will not work properly.
    • This applies to Wine Storage units as well.
  • For best operation, the unit should be in a normal ambient temperature location.
  • A Sub-Zero in a vacated home that is not heated should be winterized. See Winterizing Sub-Zero Products.
  • For information about outdoor models, which tolerate a wider temperature range, refer to Sub-Zero Outdoor Unit Temperature Range for Installation.

Refer to the product Use and Care Guide for further information on temperature control.
