    • "I have 24 years as a kitchen designer and still love my job. After university I started work in London with Siematic and was flattered to be asked asked to join Bulthaup for their new central London showroom – I moved to the USA to work on interior design projects in the California area. I was also lucky enough to have two screen plays accepted by Warner Brothers and Fox Studios as well as illustrating a children’s book.

I returned to London where I worked again helping to design a London kitchen showroom which incorporated DaDa as well as Binova and ArcLinea. However I felt passionate about British design and manufacture and was asked to join Mowlem & Co to combine their craftsmanship and manufacture with my passion for kitchen design my background in the best of the European kitchen brands.

My partner works in the restaurant industry and we are lucky enough to enjoy dining in some of London's most beautiful and innovative and inspiring restaurants – I believe a passion for food leads to great kitchen design. My sister and I talk about design all the time, she was lucky enough to have her third Oscar nomination for production design this year for Les Miserables, so I can safely say the design gene runs true and strong in our family."

      Q&A with Jane Stewart

Where do you find design inspiration?
All around – every aspect of my visual existence, from architecture of nature as well as the works of mankind, Structures, Art, Film, Literature, all play a part subliminally. How materials and shapes and shadows play together and the challenge of combining clients dreams into reality – it is a constant inspiration how each kitchen is a collaboration of memories as well as hopes. Winston Churchill once said “We shape our homes and then our homes shape us".

How do you approach the design process?
Once the basic Architecture of the space is known I tend to space plan – with basic fundamental shapes, is it round, curved? These questions prompt the client to slowly define what they really want from the design, sometimes easier for them to say what they don’t want rather than what they do. Slowly the picture builds up and then the uses and function have to be incorporated – design for me is the search for that balance.

What makes your aesthetic stand out amongst other designers?
Over the years I have worked on thousands of kitchen projects – and lucky to have won kitchen designer of the year “Designer Magazine “ and finalist three years running, as well as the honour of being shortlisted for the Homes & Gardens kitchen designer 2013. My passion for getting the most beautiful solution combined with the client's vision of the perfect kitchen is unending. The goal for me is always to create a beautiful, lasting, timeless design.

What is the greatest value you provide to your clients?
My ability to sketch by hand allows me to visually communicate instantly. This allows me to literally shape the room and its design with the client when we first meet, evolving it together as a team. I have been blessed with this gift and use it to its full. With age and experience have learnt that to listen is to succeed. Never imposing on a project my personal taste but learning and respecting that individuality of each.
