Sooting is an indication of incomplete combustion, which occurs when fuel is not efficiently and completely burned. Common causes of sooting include, but are not limited to:
- Cleanliness, placement, and alignment of burner assembly parts.
- Gas quality - LP and natural gas have different qualities, which can affect performance and sooting.
- Gas pressure
- Gas regulator, valve, manifold, orifice
- Burner assembly or element
- Air/fuel mixture adjustments
- Restricted airflow
If the Gas Range surface burner is producing soot:
- If unit is a new installation or has been converted from natural gas to liquid propane, or vice versa:
- Before using for the first time, clean the range thoroughly with hot water and a mild detergent.
- Rinse and dry with a soft cloth.
- This removes any residual oil and grease left on the surface from the manufacturing process.
- Refer to the product Use and Care Guide for further information.
- Soot during first use may be a result of impurities from the construction or installation process being burned off.
- Clean soot with hot water and a mild detergent.
- If issue continues, contact Factory Certified Service to schedule an appointment for repair.
- If unit is connected to an LP gas source, verify the tank has gas in it.
- LP gas properties may produce soot as the tank level decreases.
- If tank level is nearing empty, fill tank.
- A surface burner that is producing soot may leave residue on the bottom of pots and pans.
- Verify proper fuel type, connection, and supply pressure.
- Make sure the burner assembly is clean and dry.
- Verify the burner assembly is properly assembled and aligned.
- Make sure there is no airflow restriction over the burner assembly.
